Effective dates can quietly make a big difference in your wallet. Retroactive ratings might even bring refunds. Like the funding fee refund for veterans whose exemption kicked in before their loan closed.

Some veterans have claims that stretch back years (often due to appeals), but locking in an Intent to File date can really help. One veteran eventually won his case and received retroactive pay because his effective date was set right from the start. Which was years earlier, at a 70% rating. You do the math.

Why the Effective Date Matters

Determines Back Pay. You are paid retroactively from your effective date to the date your claim was finalized.

Not the Payment Date: It marks when your benefits start accruing, but you do not actually receive the money until the claim is officially granted.

C&P Exam

The C&P exam is evidence, not a formality. Describing your worst days accurately, not your best, is the single most repeated piece of guidance from accredited representatives.

What to Expect

Review of records: The doctor or contracted examiner will look at your file, military history, and submitted medical documents.

Questions about symptoms: You will be asked how your condition affects your daily life, routine, and ability to work.

Physical or mental check: Depending on your claim, the provider may test joint movement, check vitals, or conduct a mental health interview.

No instant result: The examiner will not tell you your rating or decision at the end of the appointment.

Presumptive Condition

Presumptions cover categories such as certain exposures and service periods. If a condition is on a presumptive list that matches your service, the connection argument is largely made for you; the claim still must be filed.

Service-Connected

Service connection is established by evidence linking a current condition to service. The percentage rating that follows drives monthly compensation, health care priority, and exemptions such as the funding fee waiver at 10 percent or higher.
